PLOT SUMMARY

In the near future, mutants are beginning to appear possessed of incredible physical and mental powers. Fearing the powers of these mutants, Mankind begins to discriminate against them and a new law is being debated in the U.S. requiring mutants to be registered. Against this backdrop, two rival mutant factions form - the evil Brotherhood of Mutants led by Erik Lehnsherr (aka Magneto) and the X-Men, led by Professor Charles Xavier who have more sympathy for Mankind. The two groups clash when two new mutants come on the scene, the teenager Rogue and the powerful Logan, aka Wolverine.

CAPSULE REVIEW

Though fans of the comic were, by and large, disappointed, the big screen debut of the X-Men is great fun, though seriously flawed by the lack of decent action set-pieces. The ending is particularly weak but Hugh Jackman's towering performance as Wolverine goes a long way to making up for any failings and excellent support from Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen (their scenes together are astonishing) is the icing on the cake. Flawed but certainly the best Summer blockbuster in many years.
