CAPSULE REVIEW
As 70s throwbacks go, this one wasn't at all bad. Although The
Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) is the usually cited reference
point, it actually has a lot more in common with Jeff Lieberman's Just
Before Dawn (1981). Director Rob Schmidt makes all the right
moves (we jump when he wants us to) and builds up a creditable amount
of suspense. The cast are rather bland - Dushku seems to be recycling
her Faith performance from TV's Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997
- 2003) - and we don't really care all that much about them but the
mutant killers are good fun and there's plenty of gory deaths to keep
us all on our toes. Lightweight and disposable but very watchable nonetheless.
