The Beast That Killed Women (1965)

REVIEW

A laughably awful attempt to fuse the clichés of the nudist movie with the creaky mad-gorilla-on-the-loose plot so beloved of 40s Poverty Row horrors. Boasting some of the worst acting ever and a script so badly planned that the author neglects to give its lead protagonists names, The Beast That Killed Women is a hellish experience.

Exploitation veteran Barry Mahon clearly had little idea of what he was doing here - even with a running time of just an hour, he can barely find enough material on the script to fit. In fact he's so desperate to get the film up to even a meager 60 minutes that virtually every scene is elongated beyond belief - one scene involving the removal of a body from the nudist camp by ambulance drags on for a full five minutes and is book ended by interminable scenes of topless women standing around talking about it.

The gorilla is a ratty looking specimen that laughably fails to match the description given by one of the protagonists - her husband even describes it as looking like "some guy in a monkey suit!" which is what it so obviously is. And the explanation for where the creature comes from is so blatantly tacked on that it suggests that no-one on the crew had any idea of the ape's origins until well into shooting.

It's not even bad enough to be enjoyable - it's simply boring and ultimately pointless.
