SUMMARY

Nine years after the ill-fated mission to Jupiter, the Discovery's orbit is decaying. A joint US - Soviet mission is launched to investigate the ship before it is destroyed in Jupiter's gravitational pull. As HAL 9000 is reactivated, Dr Heywood Floyd, who instigated the original mission, is visited by an old friend with a message that could have shattering consequences for Mankind.

CAPSULE REVIEW

Unfairly dismissed simply because it wasn't as good as 2001: A Space Odyssey [1968] - what could be? - 2010 is nevertheless a well made and hugely enjoyable film in its own right. It lacks the epic grandeur and mythic qualities of Kubrick's masterpiece, and many were turned off by its attempts to rationalise the events of the first film. But strong performances, impressive visuals and a thought-provoking story make it a better film than it's often given credit for.
