Born in St Louis, Missouri to wealthy business executive Vincent Price Sr (he was President of the National Candy Company) and Marguerite Willcox, Vincent Price was the youngest of four children, all raised in a comfortable middle class home where money was never much of a problem. An inheritance from his grandmother financed a teenage tour of European capitals, a trip that instilled in Price a life-long love of art. On graduating high school in 1929, he won a place at Yale, following his father and older brother James to the prestigious seat of learning, graduating in 1933.

His first job was teaching and doing odd jobs at the Riverdale School in New York which he held down for a year before he decided that he wanted to continue his studies. While at Riverdale, he made his acting debut, appearing in a performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore. Packing his bags, Price moved to London where he studied art at the Courtauld Institute of the University of London. It was during his stay in London that Price began to develop his love of theatre, attending West End performances by Gielgud and Olivier. The acting bug had now well and truly bitten and, after taking a few bit parts, he took a more sizeable role as a gangster in the Gate Theatre's production of Chicago In 1935.

His next major role was as the Prince Consort in Victoria Regina and when the show ended in London, it was due to head to New York. Price was invited to return home with the production and, although it meant abandoning his studies, Price readily accepted and enjoyed great success when the show transferred to Broadway. His performance was impressive enough to land him screen tests at Selznick Studios – he was even considered for the then still in pre-production Gone With the Wind (1939). He claimed to have been offered a part in MGM's Marie Antoinette (1938) but opted to turn it down, feeling that he was still too inexperienced and determined to carry on with his stage work before moving to Hollywood.

By 1938, Price had confidence had grown. A stint at Orson Welles' Mercury Theatre introduced him to actress Edith Barrett, who he married on 23 April and within weeks the Hollywood studios were calling again. Opting to accept a contract offered by Universal (which meant him just missing out on appearing in Welles' notorious War of the Worlds broadcast), Price finally appeared in his first film, playing Robert Wade in the Rowland V. Lee comedy Service De Luxe (1938). With his natural good looks, mellifluous voice and easy charm, Price was soon being promoted by Universal as a new heart-throb and more theatre and film work was soon flooding in. But Price was uncomfortable with the leading man role that Universal were grooming him for: "I talked them into letting me do a smaller parting which there was a chance of establishing myself as a character. I really didn't think I fit in the mould of a leading man in terms of Hollywood."

Price's first tastes of horror wasn't long in coming – little surprise given Universal's increasingly enthusiastic embracing of the genre. In 1939, he appeared opposite genre legends Boris Karloff and Basil Rathbone in Tower of London (1939) and was under wraps as the title character in The Invisible Man Returns (1940)

Price became a father for the first time on 30 August 1940, when his son Vincent Barrett Price, was born and soon afterwards, Price moved to Twentieth Century Fox under a new, better contract. But behind the public image, things weren't going so smoothly for the young actor - in 1944, he and Edith split. They were reconciled in 1946 but the relationship was doomed and in 1947 they parted for good and Price married Eleanor Mary Grant in 1949.

In 1953, Price made the movie that was to change the course of his career - Andre de Toth's House of Wax. Although Price had made plenty of horror before, this was the genre piece that would make him a bona fide horror star and he was so impressive in his villainous role that he was soon on his way to becoming the iconic figure we know and love today.

In 1960, he teamed up with director / producer Roger Corman and production company AIP for House of Usher, the first in a series of excellent and influential Edgar Allan Poe adaptations that would continue throughout the 60s. This was a particularly productive time for Price - his love of art lead to him being approached to join the White House Art Committee under Jackie Kennedy and he started writing, penning his autobiography I Like What I Know (mostly about his love of art) in 1959 and a second volume, The Book of Joe, inspired by his love of dogs.

Even as he entered one of his busiest periods, Price was busy elsewhere - he became a father again on 27 April 1962 when his daughter Mary Victoria was born and began working with Sears department stores on the creation of the Vincent Price Collection, a range of art collectibles. More writing followed in 1965 when he and Eleanor wrote a cook book, A Treasury of Great Recipes.

In the late 60s, Price gave what is widely regarded as his finest performance. After signing a new contract with AIP, he was offered to young director Michael Reeves who cast him as the infamous Matthew Hopkins in Witchfinder General (1969) Price's towering performance dominates the entire film, one of the best genre movies of its time.

In 1973, Mary Price filed for divorce after Price began seeing another actress, Coral Browne - they were married on 24 October 1974. During the rest of the 70s, Price continued to work tirelessly in film, television and theatre though he started to spend more of his time and efforts on a series of books and lectures devoted to his first love in life, art. Some of the genre films he made during the decade – there were less of them and many were shot in the UK – are among his best loved: The Abominable Dr Phibes (1971) and its sequel Dr Phibes Rises Again (1972); Theatre of Blood (1973); Madhouse (1074).

Price's distinctive voice was introduced to a new generation of fans in 1984 when Michael Jackson asked him to lend his glorious tones to his hit single Thriller. It was a boost to his career in his twilight years though Price saw not a penny of the millions that the subsequent album made – remember this was the peak of Jackson's fame and the album became the biggest selling of all time.

The 80s were a tough time for Price – quality work was hard to find, though it was there (a voiceover in Tim Burton's Vincent (1982) and at the very end of the decade a cameo in Burton's marvellous Edward Scissorhands (1990)) but there were far too many beneath-him efforts like The Monster Club (1980) and the dreadful Bloodbath at the House of Death (1984). Worse still, towards the end of the decade, he was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease – he was already looking gaunt and unwell as early as his 1983 when he appeared alongside Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing and John Carradine in Pete Walker's House of the Long Shadows.

Coral Browne died of cancer on 29 May 1991 and Price himself died a couple of year later, succumbing to Parkinson's and lung cancer on 25 October 1993. He left behind a remarkable body of work and an army of fans who adore him to this day. His was a unique presence in films that quite often would have been so much the worse for his absence.
