BIOGRAPHY
The son of a South London policeman, Roger Moore's first love was not
acting but art - at the age of 15, he enrolled at art college planning
to pursue a career as a painter and, on graduation, found employment
as an apprentice at an animation studio. His first taste of acting came
in the mid 1940s when he appeared as an extra and clearly it inspired
him even more than painting - he soon enrolled at the Royal Academy
of Drama and appeared in several West End plays before military service
beckoned.
Moore served as a 2nd Lieutenant in a Combined Services Entertainment
Unit in Germany as the war ended and, on demob, made his way back to
London where he worked sporadically in theatre, radio and television.
To keep bread on the table, he also worked as a model and a salesman
- he appeared on a number of magazine covers in 1948 posing with a young
Audrey Hepburn.
Deciding to take a chance with his career, Moore packed his bags and
headed west, arriving in the States in 1953. He signed a contract with
MGM and was rewarded with small roles in a number of films before getting
a break on television with recurring roles in the hit shows Ivanhoe
[1958 - 1959] and Maverick [1960 - 1961].
His big breakthrough role was as international adventurer Simon Templar
in The Saint [1962 - 1969], a TV show that was aired
around the world and which made Moore a star. During this period, he
was briefly considered by producers Albert R. Broccoli
and Harry Saltzman for
the part of James Bond in Dr
No [1962], though his contract for The Saint
prevented that.
Following The Saint, Moore did a number of unmemorable
films before signing on for another TV show, appearing as Lord Brett
Sinclair in the popular ITC production The Persuaders!
[1971]. Then, in 1972, Sean Connery made Diamonds
Are Forever and, for the second time, announced
that enough was enough and that he was putting James Bond behind
him. Having lost out once, Moore was offered the chance to appear in
the most popular series of films ever and eagerly accepted it. He made
his debut as 007 in Live and Let Die
in 1972 and stayed until 1985's A View To a Kill.
Moore continued making films alongside the Bond movies but once
his tenure as 007 finished, his appearance became more sporadic. He
tended towards appearances in documentaries, either as himself or as
the host. He returned to play 007 just once, in a TV ad for Hansen's,
in which he again donned the famous tuxedo - the campaign was quickly
abandoned, however, after Eon
Productions threatened legal action.
More recently, Moore has succeeded his old friend Audrey Hepburn as
Special Representative for the Film Arts for UNICEF, following Hepburn's
death. He was due to make his debut in a stage musical by joining the
cast of the hit West End show Aspects of Love as Sir
George. At the last minute, however, he backed out fearing that his
singing abilities wouldn't be up to scratch and was replaced by Kevin
Colson.
