	Dick Miller (1928 - ) Date of Birth: 25 December 1928 Place of Birth: Brooklyn, New York, USA Date of Death: Place of Death: Also Known As: Richard Miller BIOGRAPHY Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, Dick Miller has never been leading man material, but he's been a prolific and much loved regular ficture in B-movies, low budget trash and exploitation since the 1950s. Small, gruff voiced and craggy-faced, he's survived dramatic surgery to his lungs and a triple heart bypass to carry on working well into his 70s. The average Joe in the street will never have heard of Miller, but his face is instantly recognisable to genre fans. After graduating from the New York School of Printing (he originally planned to follow in his father's footsteps and become a printer), Miller continued his studies at New York University and City College before joining the Navy after World War Two where he became Navy boxing champion. On completion of his service, he returned to his studies, feeding a voracious appetite for learning that would eventually earn him a degree in psychology from Columbia University. When he found work hard to come by, Miller enrolled for night school classes at the New York School of Dramatic Arts. As Miller himself explains it, his choice was purely accidental - he'd been told that there was money to be made in upholstery, and originally planned to enroll at the New York School of Upholstery. But when the late-sleeping Miller learnt that classes began at 8:30 every morning, he went to the New York School of Dramatic Arts instead - characteristically downplaying his entry to the world of acting, Miller has claimed that he only studied acting because he could get paid to study under the G.I. Bill! But studying with the likes of Jason Robards and Tom Posten awakened a hitherto unsuspected love for acting and Miller was hooked. On completing his studies, he teamed up with radio DJ Bobby Sherwood to write for New York based television shows like Masquerade Party (1952 - 1960), Studio One (1948 - 1958), Playhouse 90 (1956 - 1961) and Sherwood's own Midnight Snack. In 1952, the work started to dry up after the cancellation of Midnight Snack and Miller decided to leave his native New York and headed for Hollywood to carve himself a career as a screenwriter. Two years after his arrival, Miller was still struggling to make a sale and was told by a friend to try an up-and-coming young hotshot producer-director named Roger Corman, who was making independent low budget genre movies. Corman didn't have a need for a writer, but he did need actors and offered Miller the role of a cowboy in Apache Woman (1955), an offer the desperate Miller was eager to take. He quickly got a taste of Corman's cost-cutting techniques when he was also asked to play an Indian in the same film! Miller was soon a regular fixture in Corman's films, turning out 35 features in just five years. They were wild days for Miller as he tackled a variety of roles, the diversity of which would have been impossible to find anywhere else. Corman also indulged his writing ambitions, bankrolling TNT Jackson in 1975. Miller’s reputation for hard work and versatility attracted the attention of others, including one of Corman's most successful protogees, Joe Dante who has, to date, cast Miller in some capacity in all of his feature films. Miller may not be the best actor in the world - his range is rather limited - but he's got bags of personality and an instantly recognisable face, one as familiar to television viewers as it is to movie-goers. His often fleeting appearances are always welcome and are often the best part of the film - he's one of the very few character actors whose cameos actually get rounds of applause from his ever-growing legion of fans!
