BIOGRAPHY

One of the all-time great bad directors, Mattei is less of a director and more a well-practised assembler of scenes - his films show virtually no trace of any artistic inclination and only a modicum of technical ability, yet he's accrued something of a cult following, probably due to the staggering ineptness of his work. His introduction to the film industry was through his father, who ran a production company in Rome, and Mattei started off as an editor, a role more suited to his rather mechanical approach to film-making.

Like many of the directors at work at the lower end of the Italian exploitation industry, Mattei is a great opportunist, quickly running off carbon copies of whatever hit film was in Rome cinemas at any given moment. He dabbled in all genres, but seemed most at home in violent, gorey horror, films like L'altro inferno (1980), Inferno dei morti-viventi (1981) and Rats - Notte di terrore (1984) gaining him some notoriety among fans during the early years of home video.

Mattei has frequently worked with writer Claudio Fragasso who, astonishly, stepped forward in the early 21st century to lay claim to the majority of Mattei's work, claiming that he had directed them. One has to admire the gall of a man who would so shamelessly try to claim responsibility for some of the very worst films ever made!

Amazingly, Mattei managed a late-in-the-day career revival in the wake of a US DVD release for his two best known films, Inferno dei morti-viventi and Rats - Notte di terrore, and after a six fallow years returned to directing in 2002.
