BIOGRAPHY
The son of a South Wales coal miner, Llewelyn developed his love for
show business while in high school, where he worked with the theatrical
group as a stagehand, eventually graduating to small walk-on parts.
His family, however, disapproved and when Llewelyn expressed an interest
in taking up acting as a career his uncle, a high ranking police officer,
arranged for him to take the physical test for admission to the force
as a cadet. Fortunately, his eyesight let him down and he failed the
test.
Llewelyn briefly considered joining the church as a minister and spent
a week at a retreat. But after seven days of isolation, Llewelyn changed
his mind and enrolled in the Royal Academy for the Dramatic Arts in
the mid 1930s. His career as an actor was put on hold as World War II
broke out and Llewelyn found himself assigned to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers
as a second lieutenant. He served in France, leading his troops in a
particularly harrowing campaign against a German armoured division during
which he was captured and interned in a prisoner of war camp. He spent
five years in captivity, despite an abortive attempt to escape.
Released after the war, he returned to London and picked up his career
as an actor. Though he appeared in many films, it is as the increasingly
irrascible gadget-meister Q in the James Bond films that he is best
remembered. From 1963's From Russia With Love through
to The World is Not Enough (1999), he was absent from
only one film (Live and Let Die (1973)) and became
as much a part of the series as Bond himself.
Sadly, Llewelyn was killed in a car crash just days after the release
of The World Is Not Enough while touring the UK signing
copies of his autobiography. It was somehow fitting that "Q"
should die behind the wheel of a car (albeit not the Aston Martin...),
but Llewelyn will be greatly missed by Bond fans everywhere.
