The Innocents (1961)

Jack Clayton's creepy film of Henry James's Turn of the Screw. Deborah Kerr is repressed as the spinster governess who comes to suspect that angelic children Martin Stephens and Pamela Franklin have fallen under the spell of a couple of briefly glimpsed ghosts. Screenwriter Truman Capote tries to impose a rationalisation, whereby the ghosts come from Kerr's own frustrated psyche, but Clayton doesn't skimp on the real spook stuff. Peter Wyngarde, later the improbably moustached Jason King, leers through windows as the chief spectre.
