Hellraiser [1987]

The only substantial British horror movie of the '80s is actually somewhat compromised by the mid Atlantic accents dubbed over some of the supporting players to make it seem as if a plot obviously taking place in North London is actually set in New York. That apart, the debut feature of British horror industry Clive Barker is still a high quality item, with Clare Higgins wielding a mean hammer as an adulteress trying to revive her dead lover after he has solved a magic puzzle box and been torn apart by sado masochistic demons who boast such intriguing deformities as sewn shut eyelids behidn dark glasses, nails hammered into their heads and throat incisions held open by surgical collars. The plot is lopsided, but the images, the performances and the general air of weirdness keep it going. It's not quite a 100% British item, but it does try to struggle clear of the Freddy Krueger teen market with its adult, sleazy, sexual material.
