Fourth Story (1991) Reviewed under the title Basic Deception Originally called Fourth Story, this neat thriller
is Ivan Passer's best film since Cutter's Way. When
Mimi Rogers's husband disappears, she hires absent minded priavte eye
Mark Harmon to track him down, only to have the dick discover the man
was living under an assumed name and has a bizarre family history that
weirdly intersects with Harmon's own neurosis wracked early life. Harmon,
usually an uninteresting leading man, relaxes somewhat and turns in
a likable detective characterisation and Rogers is also not bad as the
increasingly appalled heroine. With the usual excellent supprting scumball
performance from M. Emmet Walsh as Harman's partner and more than enough
plot twists and unusual comic touches to keep you interested. All that's
missing is the explicit sex promised by the box cover and the silly,
imitative title. First Published In: Empire (issue unknown) Visit Kim's Official Website at www.johnnyalucard.com
