Celia [1988]

An odd and interesting little movie from Australia, slightly prefiguring the oeuvre of Jane Campion. In 1957, all Australia is paranoid about reds under the bed and myxamytosis-spreading rabbits and little Celia, who has nightmares populated by the 'hobyars' of the fairy tale, is troubled by her friendship with the communists next door and the government's attempts to take away her pet rabbit. With an extraordinary junior performance from Rebecca Smart as the slightly creepy heroine and some very tactful work from writer-director Turner, this is an unusually intriguing variation on the perennially popular childhood reminiscence movie. Shot through with period politics and Lord of the Flies-style cruelty, it pulls a climax which ventures into horror film territory for a genuinely shock. An outstanding, unique picture.
