Broken English (1996) Patriarch Rade Serbedzija, a refugee from the Croatian conflict, rules
his family with the traditional mix of sentiment and ultra-violence,
resisting daughter Aleksandra Vujcic's attempts to integrate in New
Zealand by having a relationship with a Maori (Julian Arahanga) and
accepting cash to enter into a citizenship marriage with a Chinese immigrant.
Rather familiar as drama, but well-acted and with an interestingly gritty
cross-cultural feel, matching the tones (and stars) of Before
the Rain and Once Were Warriors. First Published In: Empire (issue unknown). Visit Kim's Official Website at www.johnnyalucard.com
