The Broken Cord (1992)

More aching TV Movie sincerity from the Cinema of Sick Children, with Jimmy Smits going for his Emmy as a disturbingly sincere professor of Native American studies who adopts a befuddled reservation kid and gradually realises his new son suffers from one of those rare and heart tugging diseases so beloved of afternoon rental videos. Because his natural mother was an drunk, the semi retarded child has complications known as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and because Smits can choke back tears with the best of them, the film takes a long time to come to terms with the pain and falling over. Well made and acted and certainly of service to the manufacturers of paper tissues, but a ho hum TV movie for all that.
