PLOT SUMMARY
Scientist John Hammond
creates the ultimate theme park, a Jurassic wonderland
populated by creatures cloned using blood retrieved from
mosquitoes petrified for 65 million years in amber.
Drafting in a team of initially sceptical scientists
(dinosaur expert Dr Alan Grant, paleobotanist Dr Ellie
Slater and chaotician Dr Ian Malcolm) to assess his
achievement, Hammond is planning to open up his
attraction when all hell breaks loose. A nerdy computer
geek, bought off by shady business rivals, attempts to
flee the island with one of the valuable DNA specimens,
is killed in the process, and leaves the security system
wide open. The dinosaurs are soon running loose and the
scientists - together with Hammond's young niece and
nephew - are trapped, pursued by a ravenous Tyrannosaurus
Rex and packs of velociraptors.
CAPSULE REVIEW
It's become highly
fashionable to trash Steven Spielberg in public for being
an unapologetically commercial director who is also
incredibly successful. Though Schindler's List
(1993) was - quite rightly - lauded far and wide, the
more blatantly entertaining but less 'worthy' Jurassic
Park was all-too-readily dismissed as just
another of Spielberg's wish-fulfillment fantasies. Which
is regrettable as, although it contains much that is
irritating, objectionable and embarrassing, it is also a
breathtaking roller coaster ride as only Spielberg can
make them. Sure, the plot is full of holes, but the
action never flags and those glorious effects are more
than value for money.
