PLOT SUMMARY

On the fourth of July, four teenagers accidentally hit a man on the road. Believing him to be dead and fearful of police involvement, they decide to dump the body in the sea, but are horrified when the "corpse" revives and, in panic, they complete the job and kill him. One year later, the group start receiving ominous messages telling them "I know what you did last summer" and a hook wielding maniac begins picking them off..

CAPSULE REVIEW

Frankly, who gives a damn what this sorry bunch of losers did last summer? Predictable and formulaic, with dreadful performances and uninspired direction, I Know What You Did Last Summer was nontheless a huge hit, chiefly on the back of the success of Wes Craven's superior Scream (1996). It revealed Scream scriptwriter's supposed talent for "irony" as just a desire to slavishly retread the teen slashers of his youth without actually adding anything new and director Jim Gillespie runs out of ideas pretty quickly and instead concentrates on Love Hewitt's breasts, which easily give the best performance in the film - a trait taken to ludicrous extremes by director Danny Cannon in the unbelievably bad sequel, the predictably titled I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (1998).
