SUMMARY

1888, Whitechapel, London: a series of horrific murders of prostitutes panics the locals and baffles the police, led by the psychic Inspector Fred Abberline. As he begins to fall in love with one of the potential victims, Mary Kelly, Abberline finds himself drawn into a vicious conspiracy that reaches into the highest echelons of power...

CAPSULE REVIEW

Though it's sure to disappoint the more devoted fans of the graphic novel, this is nonetheless an excellent Ripper movie that plays the tale as a straight ahead horror movie with more than a touch of Hammer about it. Much has been made of Depp and Graham's accents which, in truth, aren't all that bad and they at least give first rate performances, as does Robbie Coltrane who steals every scene he's in. Excellent camerawork, set design and score all help, and the Hughes Brothers' direction is assured and frequently inventive.
