PLOT SUMMARY
In medieval Europe, a gang of mercenaries seek
their revenge on a lord who refused to pay for their services. They
kidnap the woman who is meant to marry the lord's son and flee
to a castle where they are soon besieged by the nobelman's angry
army. Meanwhile, plague is ravaging the land around them and their
plans are soon starting to unravel in the most horrific manner.
CAPSULE REVIEW
Verhoeven's
breakthrough movie is a huge, sprawling and impressively grim medieval
epic that abandons the mysticism and magic of many of its ilk in favour
of a stark, brutal realism. Rape, plague and violent death, all brought
to the screen with unflinching clarity by Verhoeven, make this an
uncomfortable but compelling film. Hauer is magnificent in the lead
role and is given great support by an excellent ensemble cast.
