Fire Maidens from Outer Space (1956) Country of Origin: UK CREDITS
PRODUCTION SCRIPT DIRECTION PHOTOGRAPHY EDITING AND POST PRODUCTION MUSIC MAKE UP AND COSTUMES DESIGN AND SET CONSTRUCTION MISCELLANEOUS CAST British scientists have initiated Plan 13, an ambitious scheme to send men to the 13th moon of Jupiter which, they believe, may hold life. On On arrival the explorers are welcomed by the locals who initially incapacitate their ship, then guide them to a predestined landing point. After lots of running about and rescuing damsels in distress they are told by the planet's sole male inhabitant that this is what's left of the lost city of Atlantis. But there's something nasty in space-age Garden of Eden - The Creature, "the beast with the head of a man." Even by low budget 50s standards, this is quite appalling. Poor scripting and dreadful acting are just the lesser crimes against humanity that this fiasco could be accused of. Technical credits are a bare minimum - the soundtrack is largely inaudible for much of the time and the camerawork is so static it leaves many of the actors standing around for ages looking embarrassed while waiting for someone else to finish their business. Uniquely British - one of the ground control scientists wears a bow tie and they keep in contact with the ship by telephone! - Fire Maidens From Outer Space lacks even the accidental charm of its American counterparts. Shoddy effects, amateur hour acting and some of the least convincing 'scientific' talk ever written conspire to give the film the allure of an extended home movie, shot by Roth and a few of his mates over the course of a couple of weekends.
