PLOT SUMMARY
A man is given a map passed in the streets of Prague and decides to
follow the instructions on it. In a dank cellar he finds a copy of Goethe's
manuscript and a sorcerers cape which transforms him into Faust. Ignoring
the warnings of an angel, Faust summons the devil...
CAPSULE REVIEW
Svankmajer's second feature film surpasses even the sublime Neco
z Alenky (1988). A brilliant mix of live action, puppetry and
object animation it's certainly the strangest version of the story ever
told, full of Svankmajer's trademark disturbing images and the sense
that the whole thing is going to come crashing down around his ears
at any moment. An amazing experience, one that is just about unique,
even in the heady world of East European surrealism.
