Slick, glossy and effective it may be but
Fatal Attraction never really convinces anyone that
it's anything more than a big-budget slasher movie. On those terms,
it succeeds as well as many of its better low budget counterparts,
though the spurious attempt to justify itself as some sort of feminist
tract fools no-one. Adrian Lyne works the meager plot for all the
tension and suspense it can muster, and the cast are more than adequate
in largely unlikable roles. Like The
Silence of the Lambs
(1990), Fatal Attraction is a horror film for people
who don't usually watch horror films - the rest of us will have seen
it all before, most notably in the far superior Play Misty
For Me (1971).
