SUMMARY

Increasingly depressed and wracked with self-doubt, Mulder abandons his position on a routine wire tap to chase up a lead provided by SETI-supporting senator Richard Matheson. Learning that an automatic tracking facility in Puerto Rico has been receiving transmissions, apparently in response to the Voyager missions, Mulder races against the Blue Beret UFO Crash Retrieval Team to reach the facility and find out what's going on before the government destroy the evidence. Discovering a terrified local, Mulder learns that something has indeed been paying visits to the Arecibo Observatory. A blinding light announces their return and Mulder is suddenly face to face with the beings that took away his beloved sister...

CAPSULE REVIEW

Duchovny shoulders the burden of attention with one of his strongest and most impassioned performances, though Anderson (already beginning to show the effects of her pregnancy) isn't given an awful lot to do except rush around after Mulder and play the role of 'Doctor's Assistant', asking endless dumb questions. But as a season opener and a reaffirmation of what The X Files stands for, it's spot on. It plunges us back into the bizarre world of Mulder and Scully, where alien forces are ever present and where the greatest thing we have to fear is not the inscrutable extraterrestrials, but the agents of own governments and law enforcers.
