SUMMARY

In mid-Atlantic, on a Russian freighter, a crewman pulled in to the ship's huge septic tank by something unseen. Meanwhile, Mulder is pulled off another wiretap and assigned to a murder case in New Jersey. A badly mutilated body has been found in a sewer and only when Scully convinces him to pursue the case does Mulder begin to realise that a distinctly X Filesesque aura surrounds the case. Scully discovers a fluke worm living in the body of victim - whose arm bears a Cyrillic tattoo...

CAPSULE REVIEW

The Host underlined The X Files' intermittent interest in ecological issues, helping to position the show as the 90s analogue of the much admired British TV thriller Doomwatch (1970 - 1972). The political machinations are more subdued this time, playing second fiddle to a great, visceral horror story as only The X Files can do them. Hints of things to come (Skinner admits that this should have been an X File, the mystery voice on the phone and so on) keep the viewer hooked and the quality of Sackheim's direction is of the usual high standard we'd expect from the show. Another winner. (Full Review)
