SUMMARY
A hi-tech research project based on the side of a volcano has met with
disaster. Mulder and Scully are called in to find out what happened.
Why did the project team apparently kill each other? And what was the
experimental Firewalker robot doing inside the volcano itself? They
discover that a hitherto unknown, silicon-based lifeform is living inside
the volcano, gets inside the bodies humans and bursts from their necks
when the incubation period is up.
CAPSULE REVIEW
Following in the footsteps of One
Breath was going to be a hard task and sadly, Firewalker
just wasn't up to the challenge. Little more than a lazy rehash of the
first season story Ice,
it's a badly thought out and crudely plotted piece of fluff that simply
couldn't live up to all that had gone before. Though Nutter's direction
is as fluid and atmospheric as you'd expect ((the nocturnal chase through
the woods is particularly impressive), the narrative is simply too old
hat to involve the audience in anything other than apathy. This was
particularly regrettable as this was the first 'proper' X Files
of Season Two, the first not to be tied in some way to the ongoing arc.
