SUMMARY

A young woman picks a man up in a noisy singles bar and takes him home for a night of energetic sex. His post-coital joy is short lived, however, as he chokes to death on his own blood following a ruptured aorta. In the bathroom, the young woman watches calmly - then smoothly transforms into a man, dresses in his victim's clothes and leaves. Having already gathered case files on a number of similar cases, Mulder sets out to investigate the latest killing himself, a suitably bewildered Scully in tow. In Steveston, Massachussetts, the duo encounter the Amish like community The Kinded, an isolated religious cult living a spartan existence in the woods - surely they can't be involved with this increasingly baffling series of murders?

CAPSULE REVIEW

Certainly one of the stranger first season episodes and if you're looking for those all pervading pop-cultural references, try Witness (1985) crossed with Looking For Mr Goodbar (1977). Though the basic idea is a good one, there's something not quite right about the execution, something that never quite gels. Genderbender has a number of good ideas (perhaps too many - there are clearly three different episodes fighting for control here) but the script needed one last polish before all the rough edges were taken off.
