SUMMARY
While Scully tries to deal with the death of her father, she joins
Mulder in tracking down a serial killer who abducts, tortures and ultimately
murders young student couples. Following up a mysterious lead, the duo
confront convicted serial killer Luther Lee Boggs awaiting execution
on death row after being caught using a profile prepared by Mulder.
Boggs is now claiming psychic abilities and demands an audience with
an unusually sceptical Mulder. Scully is alarmed when Boggs claims to
be in contact with the recently deceased Captain Scully and she becomes
convinced of his claims when he begins to sing Beyond the Sea, the song
played at her father's funeral and Boggs uses the dead man's pet name
for his daughter, Starbuck. Meanwhile, the race is on to find the killer
- and Mulder has walked into an elaborate trap set by the incarcerated
killer in revenge for his capture...
CAPSULE REVIEW
Another stand-out season one episode and the first real chance for
Anderson to show us what she's really made of - for much of the episode,
Mulder is incapacitated, leaving Scully to solve the case largely unaided.
It may well be rather reminiscent of both Silence
of the Lambs (1991) and Exorcist
III (1990) (even down to Brad Dourif playing much the same
role) but like Ice, it plays the familiar riffs with
such remarkable style that one is willing to overlook this blatant paoching
of ideas. (Full
