SUMMARY

During the Spanish Civil War, young orphan boy Carlos finds that his new home, a strange orphanage in the middle of nowhere, is being haunted by the ghost of a young boy, Santi.

CAPSULE REVIEW

With superb performances, a great score and del Toro's best direction thus far, El espinazo del diablo is a remarkable, moving and, yes indeed, haunting film that shows a lot more of de Toro's talents than the likes of Blade 2 [2002]. In fact, it couldn't be any more different to del Toro's Hollywood movies, owing more to M.R. James than Marvel Comics, suggesting that the director's real forte lies in gentle, understated horror.
