SUMMARY

In the far distant future, the desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, is the only known source of the most powerful substance in the universe, the spice melange. Without the spice, commerce would collapse, space travel would be impossible and the empire would be at an end. As such, Arrakis has become the centre of a vicious power struggle between two of the great Houses, Atreides and Harkonnen. Double crossed by the Harkonnens and the Emperor, House Atreides is relocated to Arrakis and all but wiped out. Only the Duke's concubine, the Bene Gesserit Lady Jessica and their son Paul survive. Out in the desert, among the planet's indigenous population, the Fremen, Paul comes to realise that he is the Kwisatz Haderach, the messiah that the Bene Gesserit sisterhood have been waiting for - and also a messiah figure to the Fremen. The fight back against the Emperor begins...

CAPSULE REVIEW

This second attempt to film Dune is another disappointment. An entertaining and always engrossing one, but a disappointment nonetheless. It triumphs in its teasing out of the subtleties in Herbert's novel and finally captures on screen the various cultures of the Dune universe in all their glory. But it's hamstrung by a ridiculously low budget and Harrison's curious decision to play down some important characters (Dr Yueh) while needlessly expanding others (Irulan). (Full Review)
