PLOT SUMMARY
A new comet is discovered by an American schoolboy, a comet that appears
to be on a collision course with the Earth. A television jouranlist
uncovers the truth about the impending end of the world while investigating
a sex scandal involving a prominent politician. As the comet approaches,
desperate plans are hatched to destroy it in space before it can get
too close - if the crew of the converted space shuttle Messiah can't
obliterate it with nuclear weapons, then the only hope for the human
race seems to be a network of caves that can hold a million survivors...
CAPSULE REVIEW
A sprawling and sluggish soap opera that narrowly beats its rival,
the appalling Armageddon (1998), in the entertainment stakes though
that isn't really saying much. Unlikeable characters don't really help
us to become involved in the unfolding drama and curiously we don't
really get any sense of the impending danger until the admittedly excellent
closing scenes. The sentimentality is almost too much to endure and,
coupled with the generally poor performances, it removes what little
credibility Deep Impact may have had. Worth watching for the apocalyptic
finale but is it really worth the pain of sitting through the rest t
get there?
