PLOT SUMMARY

In 1535, a Mexican alchemist builds the Cronos device, a mechanical scarab that drains blood from its victims and keeps its inventor virtually immortal. The alchemist is finally killed in 1997 upon which the Cronos device falls into the hands of an antique dealer, Jesus Gris. But Cronos is being pursued by dying tycoon Dieter De la Guardia and his nephew Angel.

CAPSULE REVIEW

Del Toro's directorial debut is a stunning reworking of vampire mythology, blessed with an intelligent script full of well delineated characters and inventive new takes on well-worn ideas. It's certainly a lot more satisfying than Del Toro's later take on vampirism, the by-the-numbers action movie Blade II (2002). Fresh, unique and constantly surprising, Cronos was a remarkable and witty debut.
